October 2022 Cheese of the Month Club Selections

The October shipment of our monthly cheese club is all about big flavors from big families. All three cheeses come from family-owned creameries, including the famous Von Trapp farmstead and one run by 14 (count 'em) siblings! Read on to learn about this month's selections and sign up to have this month's club shipped straight to your door!

Mad River Blue from Von Trapp Farmstead - Waitsfield, VT

Mad River Blue is a rich, fudgy, cow’s milk blue cheese crafted in Vermont’s Mad River Valley. The von Trapp family (of The Sound of Music fame) took up residence in Vermont after the second World War, and chose the farm because the location reminded them of the landscape of their native Austria. They have been practicing regenerative farming on their farm since 1959, and have been making artisan cheese since 2009. The dairy farm is now run by the founders’ grandchildren, who decided to add value to their family’s herd of certified organic cows by making artisan cheese. Mad River Blue is dense, earthy and peppery with notes of black licorice, mushrooms, and chocolate.

Nancy's Camembert from Old Chatham Sheepherding Co. - Old Chatham, NY

A silky, buttery, bloomy rind sheeps' milk triple creme cheese that can put your favorite brie or camembert to shame—from a farm owned by a married couple with one of the largest herds of sheep in the country! Sheeps' milk is naturally the highest in butterfat, coming in at around 7% (cows and goats are more around the 4-5% range). That means that the paste of this washed rind cheese from Old Chatham Sheepherding Company is chock full of fatty goodness, melting on the tongue and leaving you craving another bite! The rind lends a slight mushroomy quality to the cheese, rounding out the sweet cream flavor with a touch of earthy-ness. Aged for 6 weeks or more, Nancy's Camembert is a Saxelby favorite!

Eleven Brothers from Boston Post Dairy - Enosburg Falls, VT

A delicious, semi-firm goat’s milk gouda style cheese from Boston Post Dairy, not normally available for retail purchase. This farm is run by the 14 children of the Gervais family, 11 of whom are boys! Two of the sisters run the creamery and cheese business, and the third sister owns and operates the goat dairy that makes the milk! This family affair is producing some delicious cheese… Eleven Brothers is malty, fruity, and musky with just a hint of sweetness. A wonderful table cheese, or is also delicious grated over salads.
